I have always loved everything to do with nature, and have always enjoyed exploring. Some of my fondest memories are from spending time with my family and friends outdoors. I have always enjoyed taking long walks through the park, and finding a quiet place to sketch my surroundings or read. These fond memories helped guide my decision for the topic for my independent project.
Known is a series of paintings of natural things found around Western Canada. For each painting, I created a realistic representation of the item. I wanted my work to showcase the beauty of things that Canadian residents and tourists would have heard but may not have had the chance to properly encounter.
Over the eight weeks we had for this project I worked tirelessly, dedicating about a week and a half for each painting. I started by drawing a detailed sketch, indicating where my main focal points were. I then went onto paint an under-painting, highlighting all the light and dark areas and creating a rubric of colours for my mind to follow. After all this was done I started painting. Each section is made up of many different colours and layers upon layers of paint, all to achieve the blended look showcased in many of my paintings.
In conclusion, Known is meant to show the minimalistic elegance of things that are often looked over or ignored. Through this project I hoped to represent many of the things that I have fallen in love with over the years and I hope you enjoy them too.
